Fran uses printing, photography, burning, installation, film, stitch, technology, text, objects, sound, casting, and multiple embodied processes to ‘draw’. Her practice involves collecting, documenting, sorting and re-presenting everyday archives, such as the visual and textual data amassing on our mobile phones. The resultant drawings attempt to articulate the socio-political concepts, spaces and interrelations that define contemporary living experiences. Most recently, this has focused on mapping the changing nature of ‘home’ in the context of globalisation and unprecedented human mobility.

'A Polite Drawing' . 112 x 76cm, Conté 620 on Velin Arches Noir,
The description of drawing as an innocent and polite amusement is antithetic to using drawing as a way of agitating or protesting which I have been exploring in relation to feminist art historical research. The cover image depicts a wealthy woman surrounded by the trappings of intellectual with a pen in one hand and her head in the other, perhaps lost in thought. Prominently displayed behind her is a male bust, watching over her.By reconstructing this image I felt as if I was reenacting the use of drawing as a way of restricting women to aspire to adequacy, not greatness. The negative image held the most interest as it references the microfiche from which the image is taken and the theory of negative space relating to a lack of artist women that I have been developing.
